Honesty Vs. Being walked on!
I have had this reoccurring problem my entire life! I know that I am in control but, how do I let this happen? Not only once but, over and over!!! I let people walk all over me! In my jobs, my home, pretty much anywhere... Is it that I'm afraid to confront them? Usually when it happens, either I don't notice it right away or, I can't find the right words in time to explain my feelings in a way that is tactful. So, most of the time I don't say anything at all. Really, it's just about being honest! Why is it so hard for me to be honest when people do or say something to me that I do not like? Personally, I appreciate people who can find the words to be honest about how they feel! So, why then do I find it so hard to do myself? I am finding it's easier with my close friends and family but, strangers and my employers are really what is tough! Well, one obvious reason with employers is that you need a job! If you tick them off with your honesty, it might end up biting you in the tush! I know though, there has got to be a way with finesse of words, to stand up for yourself while not poking the bear! I am obviously, just not that good at it! I have an aggressive personality but, when it comes to this, sometimes I just don't want the hassle standing up for myself might cause! Unfortunately, by not speaking up I cause storms within myself anyway! I did read a blog once that said maybe it's me that just "thinks" I'm being a victim! Because, I always expect people to walk all over me it happens. There may be some truth to this but, still to this day I have not found a way to fix it! It also seems that people in general would rather be lied to about certain things; then why I ask, do they ask questions they really don't want to know the answer to? This is just an area I need to explore further! Maybe with a better vocabulary and some daily affirmations I can feel more confident in standing up for myself! Please, please if I ever say or treat you in a way that is offensive or hurtful, say something! I may get butt hurt at first but, in the long run I will be great-full! I just need to give others the same respect! If I feel I am being used as a doormat then it is unfair to me and them not to say something!
My daily affirmation:
I am a strong, good person and I have the right to be honest about my feelings!
If you have any ideas or share a similar belief or experience about honesty please share!!!

Belonging!
In today's world of cell phones, email, internet, and all of our so called wonderful technology, where is the human connection? You may say all of this allows us to connect more, share knowledge across longer distances ect... but, at what cost?
If we haven't noticed this technology has created a rift in human relations. We know what's going on in Japan but, do we know what's going on right here in our own community?
There once was a time when we needed each other to survive now, we focus on the individual me, my, mine!!!
We fill our gap by contributing to causes that appeal to us on TV or otherwise advertised. We can browse the internet and find that cause that just speaks to us and by sending our monthly check we feel like we are contributing to society and the betterment of the world.
While, I am not saying this is not a good idea, I am saying we need to pay more attention to what's in front of us. The world we live in that's right under our noses.
I feel like our lack of kindness towards each other is a direct result of this individual way of thinking.
Of course, this is just one way of thinking. There are a lot of good things that have come from us cultivating our individuality. I just believe we need to find a better balance. Relying on a smaller closer nit community would solve a lot of our problems, from the environment, to our health, our relations, and the way we think about our lives in general.
A simple way to start would be to take your days slower. Actually pay attention to the person in front of you.
Give of your self when ever you can.
Be yourself but, also be aware of your community in where you live!
Ask for help when you need it, give help when you can!
Buy and eat locally and seasonally.
Give back what you take in some way or another.
Think about it, when has living this large fast more, more, more, life made you happier?
Just an example: When you go shopping at one of these big chain stores, you can feel the stress as soon as you enter, no personal connection just the ching, ching, ching, of the cash register!!!
Enjoy the simple things! Smell the roses, look someone in the eye, shop at your local mom and pop stores, help a stranger, become active in your community.
A Jewish tale tells of a good king who is dying. Before all his weeping subjects, he calls for someone to bring him an arrow and asks the weakest of them to break it. The man does so with ease. Then he asks for a bundle of arrows bound together and asks the strongest of them to break it. Despite all his efforts, the man cannot do it. To his subjects he says, "As my inheritance, I bequeath to you the union among you all. Be united with one another. This oneness will give you great strength, which alone you would never be able to attain." (the power of kindness by: Piero Ferrucci)

The tiniest of sparks can inspire a Universe...
I mentioned in my previous blog diversity.
I have yet found another beautiful example of diversity.
An art form like no other.
I don't know too much about Capoeira yet, but I fully intend on finding out!
I was able to witness this art in person for the first time last night.
It is considered a martial art but, if I had to explain it I would say it's martial arts mixed with yoga mixed with break-dancing!
The history of Capoeira is facinating and it explains why it looks like a dance.
Known historical record of Capoeira as a martial art is approximately 1770, check out the link below.
It is the coolest, most fun thing I have ever tried to date!
My whole life I've always wanted to try a martial art.
Until now however, nothing seemed to fit me!
I don't really like the idea of sparring, I don't have anything to prove or need to dominate another, (yea and maybe I'm just a passive hippie chicken).
Having said that, I am in totally awe of anyone who has an art form that they do well.
I love the diversity in the martial arts, yoga, sports, or whatever is your thing!
I love Capoeira because it feels primal, and just right!
A big part of the Capoeira experience is music.
Music using atabaque drums and an African instrument called the berimbau (among others), to give that tribal sound that resonates down to your core.
Brings me back to my Sepultura days but, that's a topic for another day.
The music, the energy, the strength and creativity that is poured into this sport calls to my spirit.
I happily embark on this somewhat intimidating venture with courage and excitement.
I can hear Marvin Zindler now, "Have a good weekend. Good golf, good Capoeira, or whatever makes you happy!"
P.S. I know I am totally random sometimes. Some people call that ADD I call it passion.

Contentment and lifes journey!
Woke up this morning in a funk! Bleh, I hate that!
Thing is, I know I have the power to change it *smiles*. While asking for a sign of what to do about my bad mood, santosa came to mind.
Santosa - Contentment
Another niyama is santosa, modesty and the feeling of being content with what we have. To be at peace within and content with one's lifestyle finding contentment even while experiencing life’s difficulties for life becomes a process of growth through all kinds of circumstances. We should accept that there is a purpose for everything - yoga calls it karma – and we cultivate contentment 'to accept what happens'. It means being happy with what we have rather than being unhappy about what we don't have.
Niyamas are part of yoga's eight limb philosophy. To read more about The Eight Limbs of Yoga see this website, I believe it covers them well. http://www.expressionsofspirit.com/yoga/eight-limbs.htm
Being content with oneself does not mean that we can not be ambitious.
It's just another tool that can help lead to happiness.
Things can not MAKE you a better person, only you have the power to do that.
Things can serve as tools to help you on your journey to becoming a more balanced, healthy person.
Yoga has helped be that for me (all of yoga, not just the Asanas)!
What has helped you on your journey to greatness?
Is your guide to life a religion, sport, martial art, the arts, music?
So, there is about 7 billion people on planet Earth, in my opinion we have options because of our diversity.
Diversity is what makes us special, diversity in ethnicity, diversity in faith, diversity in love.
Do what makes you happy, and let others do what makes them happy.
Your eternal guide of emotions will not steer you wrong.
Good humor is a tonic for mind and body. It is the best antidote for anxiety and depression. It is a business asset. It attracts and keeps friends. It lightens human burdens. It is the direct route to serenity and contentment.

Parking lot Wildlife
I've always been a child of nature.
Thankfully, I was able to spend most of my childhood surrounded by land, ponds, forest, and farms with lots of animals and native wildlife. I can remember encounters with wildlife as early as 2 years old. I remember walking through the woods with my grandpa naming trees and animals, it was the most exciting thing to me, and memorable. This one time in particular, if you know me, you know I have a naturally loud voice and I talk a lot so, I was chitter chattering on and on and my grandpa turned to me and said, "if you don't hush up, your never going to see anything," in the very next second a deer jumped out from a bush in front of us an ran off. I still remember the look him and I shared from that experience. All of these memories came flooding to my mind while thinking about this blog. The point of this blog however, is not my past memories but, of parking lot wildlife. I still retreat to the outdoors and nature as much as I can, even volunteering at the Wildlife Education and Rehab from time to time but, suburban wildlife has always fascinated me. The quote "suburbia, the place where they cut down trees then name streets after them," comes to mind. It's always a sad thing to see new development, knowing that so many organisms will loose their home. Although, just as we would prevail if something major destroyed everything we knew, so do they. Not all of them of course but, it's bitter sweet seeing these wild animals and birds make due with what they have. Another quote comes to mind, "Nature will prevail." Just off my apartments back patio I can witness, bunnies, many different species of birds including birds of prey, fox, raccoon, and opossum, and no telling what else I haven't seen yet. What really fascinates me though, are the cutest little killdeer, (a species of sandpiper) birds with their young, scurrying their long little legs so fast through empty parking lots at 5am in the morning. I only see them really early in the morning but, they are the cutest thing. They must live in near by retention ponds and bushes. Just the other morning while driving to my 5:30am yoga class there were massive amounts of killdeer scooting through the parking lot with their sooo cute young, bobbin and weaving away from my car, (of course I would NOT hit them). Furthermore, I saw two huge tricolored herons just chillin, walking around the parking lot. This just goes to show that they will survive if their bare necessities are met. I think it would benefit us greatly to have as many untouched, preserved places where this wildlife can live and thrive. Even in suburbia, just creating as many spaces as we can for them will help them survive. Hopefully, eventually lead us to understand that they deserve more than that. It will not only benefit our Earth as a whole but, enrich our communities, and our lives. So, whether you believe in intelligent creation or not, science proves we are all made from the same stuff, killdeer included... All I'm saying is that I enjoy those such encounters and I believe we need to share this space we occupy with wildlife better than we are right now if we expect to see things like this in the future. I support all efforts to create more habitat for wildlife but, we also need to preserve the already matured environments as well. Why not redevelop areas that are run down and wasting away, while we cut down more trees for more parking lots somewhere else instead? Ok - I'm done or I'll continue forever LOL, - Have a beautiful day - Stop and delight in all that surrounds you!

ZombieLand
The poster to the movie ZombieLand gave me an idea for my blog post this morning... Zombie definition from wikipedia: The term is often figuratively applied to describe a hypnotized person bereft of consciousness and self-awareness, yet ambulant and able to respond to surrounding stimuli. It's pretty reminiscent of how a majority of people behave on a daily basis. I speak of cultivating sensitivity in my yoga classes a lot. Throughout our daily lives some how we've become living zombies, we wake, dress, brush our teeth, say I love you and go through our motions... Sometimes we aren't even aware of ourselves as we drive to work. We get there and think back wondering, how did we arrive? Did we even notice anything along the way? These zombie like motions affect everything we do. People come to yoga class to escape the stress of daily life only to zombie through their asana poses not feeling anything other than muscle tension and physical effort. Cultivating sensitivity to our bodies and our yoga practice will cultivate sensitivity off of the mat into our lives. Just like anything else, practice makes permanent. Even if you don't do yoga, practicing sensitivity will deepen the experiences you have in your life, from washing the dishes, to hugging someone you love. By paying attention to the task at hand, you begin to cultivate sensitivity. For example: when you eat; see the colors of your food, what textures are there, is it hot or cold, where did your food come from, how many hands did it take from creation to your plate, how does it feel in your mouth, is it salty, sweet? Most of us don't even taste our food, we are too busy watching TV, or scarfing it down our pipes; leading to overeating and feeling not satisfied... This is just one example. Creating sensitivity is creating mindfulness, practicing mindfulness is what adds meaning to your life. Many books have been written on this subject but, in brief, when you add meaning to everything in your life, you begin to delight in the "smaller" things. If you're always wanting more and more, you're not paying attention to the beauty and awe in what you are experiencing now. Back to yoga; when you create sensitivity in your yoga practice you are paying attention to the sensations in your body, by practicing this simple thing your practice all of a sudden has meaning, you can flow into your poses with greater ease and comfort, feeling exactly where you need to take your pose in that moment. Creating sensitivity and mindfulness in your life leads to contentment, contentment leads to lack of suffering. Start today, just bring your attention to whatever task you are doing and enjoy the moment. You don't have to win the lottery or keep up with the Jones's to have a meaningful life.
There is a great section on cultivating sensitivity in a book by: ErichSchiffmann. Link below...
